Saudi Arabia and Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy will sign contracts for the power interconnection network on June 22, Egyptian Youm7 daily reported, citing unnamed source at the ministry.

 

The project is set to begin operations in early 2021 with a capacity of 3,000 megawatt (MW).

 

The related studies were completed by both parties and construction of transmission stations of the Badr- Al-Madinah-Tabuk line will commence in mid-2018, after signing the contracts. 

 

Three stations will also be linked via aerial lines and submarine cables across the Gulf of Aqaba and will help exchange energy between the two countries in peak hours.

 

The project costs $1.6 billion, of which $610 million were paid by Egypt.
